Newton Hall staff cocktail competition

Last night Newton Hall hosted a group-wide cocktail competition and it was a great success!
 
It was based on two rounds and the concept was all about the ‘story’.
 
Alnwick Rum sponsored the event and Jannick and Ian, from Alnwick Rum, formed the judging panel along with myself.
 
The results were as follows:
Round One – The brief was to produce a cocktail that had to include one of the three Alnwick Rums.  No time pressure.  It was about taste, presentation, the story and back bar cleanliness.
 
Results:
1st – Billy Sutherland – Newton Hall (Martini El Presidenti)
2nd – Danielle Derbyshire – Liberty Browns  (Huffle House)
3rd – Andrew McDonnell – As You Like It (Sugar Sands Martini)
 
Round Two – The brief for this round was that the cocktail had to have a Northumbrian story.  Simple as that.
 
Results:
1st – Rachael Utting – As You Like It (Save the Bees)
2nd – Amira Mahmoud – As You Like It (Don’t Diss-Pear)
3rd – Nathan Murphy – Newton Hall (Holy Grail)
 
The standards across the whole competition were exceptionally high and the two Alnwick Rum judges were so impressed that they decided to add an extra prize for extraordinary effort.  There was particular comments about the high standards of confidence shown by so many young and relatively inexperienced bartenders.
 
This prize is a day out to Holy Island to visit the winery, brewery, gin distillery and the mead production area – fantastic! (and myself and Dale Lilford get to go too!)
The two deserved winners of this prize were Tom Lodge and Rachael Utting from AYLI.
